Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī Maharaj Deo of Chinchwad constructed this temple at the cost of Rs. 40,000. It flourished in the period of Śrī Nārāyaṇa Maharaj Deo & Śrī Dharaṇīdhara Maharaj Deo. Nearly 100 years later Madharavrao Peshave dedicated the assembly hall to Lord Chiṁtāmaṇī and expanded the temple.
After that, Haripant Phadke and many other devotees have enhanced the beauty and magnificence of this temple. A grand fortification for the temple was constructed during the Peshwa period and spacious courtyards have been created in it. The idol of ŚrīChiṁtāmaṇī is big in size, east facing and has a left sided trunk. The idol is in a sitting position. The main entrance of the temple is north facing. Outside the main temple there are three small idols kept in three recess on three sides. Dakshinmukhi Hanuman is established in the north. Gaṇeśa, who is at the backside of Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī idol in the west side is known as Lambodar Gaṇeśa. Śrī Mudgal Purāṇa describes Śrī Lambodara as the deity of the western direction. Gaṇeśa named Uttareshwar has been established in the north direction. There are huge rows of lamps (Deepmala) as soon as you enter the temple that attract attention. A huge bell captured by Śrī Chimajiappa from the Portuguese during his conquest of Vasai is a special attraction of this place. The place where Kapil Maharshi returned his Chiṁtāmaṇī Gem to Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī has a magnificent tree named Kadamba tree that can still be seen at this place.
The temple premises include Śrī Viṣṇu Lakshmi Temple, Śrī Mahadeva Temple, Śrī Dakshinmukhi Hanuman Temple etc. The stone road from the main entrance to the river was built by the Peshwas. Theur village is surrounded by the Mula-Mutha river on three sides. Here the river flows full of water for all months. The river is called here as ‘Kadambatirtha’ or ‘Chiṁtāmaṇī Thirtha’. Recently, an oil painting, Mural & Palanquin of the Śrī Madhavrao Peshwa has been installed here in an enclosure.
There are the temples of Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī’s parents ‘Madhav and Sumedha Devi at the back side of the Yashwant Cooperative Sugar Factory. Near to it is Khadakeshwar temple dedicated to Shiva. Kalika temple and Bhairavnath temple are in the same area. On the bank of the river to the west is a memorial to Ramabaisaheb, who went to sati with her husband, the Madhavrao Peshwa. The Ramabai Peshwa memorial has been restored by Chinchwad Devasthan. Kaundinya Rishi’s ashram is approximately 1 km to the southwest of Śrīchintamani temple.
