Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj Penance Place

On the orders of his Guru Śrī Nayanbharati Gosavi, Śrīman Mahasadhu Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj traveled to Theur. Śrī Moraya Gosavi was happy to hear the greatness of this place told by villagers. He began penance as per the Guru’s order after taking the Darshan of Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī. He sought a secluded place where no one would disturb him. Even today that place is famously known as the ‘Morayache Asana – Seat of Moraya i.e.where Śrī Moraya Gosavi used to sit for penance’. Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj went into a deep Samadhi (intense contemplation) at that place regardless of cold, wind, heat and rain.

His state of Samadhi remained for forty-two days without food and water. Then came a moment of test during his period of penance. A tiger came from the forest. Seeing the Moraya Gosavi, he pounced on to eat him. He let out a ferocious roar before that. At that sound, Moraya Gosavi opened his eyes slightly and looked at the tiger pouncing on him. But as soon as Moraya Gosavi saw that tiger, it turned into a stone. However, Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj had no idea that the tiger had turned into a stone. Closing his eyes, he again went into a state of Samadhi. Even today that stone is present at Theur.

After forty-two days of samadhi, however, the presiding deity of that place ‘Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī’ was pleased. He appeared directly before Śrī Moraya Gosavi. Waking him up from his samadhi, he said, ‘Now don’t do severe austerities like this. I am satisfied with your penance. As the fruit of your penance, I will take birth as your son. You accept Gṛhasthasrama (homestead). Follow your duties with all-embracing devotion.’ Hearing this order of Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī, Moraya Gosavi became worried.’God, don’t let me be bound by the ties of this world,’ he begged. How can I breach the long-held chastity vow I’ve kept? I will lose you and your devotion because I will be trapped in the bondage of the universe. Don’t drag me into this temptation.’

“You accept Grhasthrama just because I want to be your son.” Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī stated.

Moraya Gosavi said, ‘God, I accept Gr̥hasthāśrama as your command. But how should I know that you have been born in my house? What would be the proof? Kindly give me an indication of your birth.’

Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī said “My birth sign is that when I take birth, I will do the Khechari mudra (One of the Yogic a gestures or postures). I will not cry like usually all children do. On my heart a claw shaped band of sendura (red clay powder) will be present. Now you return to Morgaon. Consider the Prasad that you will get there as a form of me.” Thus said Chiṁtāmaṇī disappeared.

Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī Maharaj Deo, the son of Śrīman Mahasadhu Śrī Moraya Gosavi Maharaj, was an incarnation of Śrī Chiṁtāmaṇī of Theur.
